The Jet Age | |
The MiG 15, the legendary Sovietic fighter, was born in the minds of one
of WWII German main design teams, the one guided by Focke - Wulf Chief
designer Kurt Tank, who designed, among other famous aircraft, the FW-190.
While the MiG 15 was being built, a son of the same idea was being
developed in Argentina, where Kurt Tank had emigrated accompanied by
his design team.

This beautiful sleek airplane that surpassed 1000 Km/h
and could be controlled with the tip of a finger, was victim of a bad
politic judgement, and was left aside, its true potential undeveloped.

The Story | |
At the end of World War II, German technicians and their advanced
knowledge in Aeronautics, especially their investigations on the
swept wing, were a codiced prey for the winning nations. The main
German technicians were being re-located in either the West (USA,
England) or the East (URSS). In the case of Kurt Tank, he was offered a position with the British, but at that times the English aeronautical industry didn't offer a good future for him; he was also contacted by US representatives, but Tank hated the North-Americans. So, the logical option was the URSS. Tank was kept as a "prisoner" in the Schaumburg castle in the British zone, but had the freedom to go and return almost without restrictions. He began conversations with some Soviet agents in the occupied Berlin, taking with him, drawings and calculations. It is supposed that he took with him the plans of the Ta-183 I and II (that had been prepared for an emergency program of jet fighters for the Luftwaffe, in mid 1944), and perhaps his 'idea for a jet fighter that could be powered by a Rolls Royce Nene engine'. The representatives that the URSS sent to that meetings were very kind, and had deep knowledge in the aeronautic subject, so Kurt Tank began to feel comfortable, thinking he had a good future among them. But on one meeting with them, a Sovietic general (who later passed to the West) told him that he was not going to be allowed to return to the British zone, and was going to be taken to Moscow. With his help he escaped, abandoning all the documentation in Berlin.
